The Dodgers stranded seven base runners through the first four innings. The Dodgers scored 13 runs against the Rockies in the series opener, but they did so without hitting any home runs. On Friday night, the Dodgers’ offense scored all but one of their five runs on a couple of two-run home runs against Chad Kuhl. Ryan Braun is the most recent player to reach the 30–30 club in multiple seasons .
The power-hitting leadoff batters trickled in over the next 20 years, but the explosion came over the last five full seasons. Mookie Betts led off the top of the fourth with a booming triple to the gap. Ryan Feltner, out of the bullpen, got thrown into the fire for his first career relief appearance.

Four players accomplished 30–30 seasons in 1987, 1996, 1997 and 2011, the most in a single season. Through the divisional era, players hitting 30 home runs while batting leadoff were like unicorns. Brewers infielder Tommy Harper hit 31 home runs in 1970, all from the leadoff spot, surpassing his homer total from the previous four seasons combined. Bobby Bonds hit 35 homers while batting first for the Angels in 1973, then Rick Monday hit 31 such home runs for the Cubs in 1976, his last year in Chicago before getting traded to the Dodgers. This is a list of some of the records relating to home runs hit in baseball games played in the Major Leagues. A few other records are kept on separate pages, they are listed below.
When I first heard someone mention Turner’s chance to reach 30 home runs, my first thought was of the bobblehead of the 30-homer club given away back in 2014. The Dodgers’ first 30-homer club of Ron Cey, Dusty Baker, Reggie Smith, and Steve Garvey in 1977, has been replicated once since. Richard was particularly tough on Baker and going to the bottom of sixth inning, Baker was 7-for-42, all singles, against Richard. He then got into his 914 Porsche and began his drive back to Sacramento.

The teams combined for nine homers in the game, including four consecutive long balls by Schmidt. In the second game of a doubleheader, Whiten went wild, clubbing a grand slam in the first inning. He followed it up with a three-run dingers in the sixth and seventh before hitting a two-run homer in the ninth. Betts hit two home runs on Friday, fueling a comeback win in Miami, and also set a record.
In 1997, he led Major League Baseball in home runs, but led neither the American nor National League, as his season was split between the Oakland Athletics and St. Louis Cardinals. If that season were to be included, he would be the league leader for five seasons, four of which were in succession. The Dodgers and watching the offseason from the outside Carlos Correa switching from the Giants to the Mets was great MLB theater. But the Dodgers shouldn’t be quick to laugh at their rivals in San Francisco, considering the dormant offseason in Los Angeles to date. It took a week for Baker to hit his 29th home run, at Houston on September 25th.

In arguably the craziest way to achieve the feat, Delahanty hit two of his four home runs inside the park, according to Baseball Almanac. He is the only member of the four-homer club to even have one inside-the-park homer as part of his feat. Hodges homered off the great Warren Spahn in the second inning, took Normie Roy deep in the third before clubbing a two-run homers off Bob Hall in the sixth and Johnny Antonelli in the eighth. Colavito was a prolific home run hitter in his prime, topping 20 homers 11 times, eclipsing 30 homers seven times and 40 homers on three occasions. The legendary Mays got going early, crushing a solo home run in the first inning. He then went deep again in the third, sixth and eighth innings in what resulted in an eight-RBI day and 16 total bases.
At some point in September, the Dodgers were looking to do something for the first time in major league history. Mookie Betts on Saturday hit a Sandy Alcántara slider 411 feet, giving him 30 home runs on the season. That’s a milestone in itself, but that all the homers have come while batting first makes it even more rare. Kimbrel came in and loaded the bases with two outs in the ninth bringing the winning run to the plate with Grichuk.

The Dodgers returned to Dodger Stadium to finish the season and Baker played five games without putting one over the fence. Game 162 would be his last chance and the Astros had their best, J.R. Richard was having a good season and the Dodgers never had much success against him. At the start of September, Steve Garvey led the Dodgers with 28 home runs, Reggie Smith had hit 25 and Ron Cey had 24 homers. And now Betts, who has the 37th season of 30 home runs in Los Angeles Dodgers history, and the 55th such year in franchise history, counting the Brooklyn years. In just his third season with the Dodgers, 64 of Betts’ 69 home runs have come while batting first.
Barry Bonds joined the 30–30 club in five seasons, a record he shares with his father Bobby. It was punctuated by Finley’s walk-off grand slam that gave the Dodgers an NL-best 53rd comeback win of the season, setting a franchise record that was previously held by the 1953 Brooklyn team . One-eighth of Hodges' homers that season came in one game, as he clubbed 32 home runs for the year.
Cedric Mullins is the most recent player to reach the 30–30 club. Hank Aaron is one of six 30–30 club members to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. The Dodgers drafted 40 players in the June draft and eight in the January draft. Of those, eight players would eventually play in the Major Leagues. Baker’s 30th home run also made history in that it’s believed to have led to the first-ever high-five when rookie Glenn Burke met him at home plate for the celebration.
Green had just five homers on the year before breaking out in a monster way with arguably the most impressive offensive day in baseball history. Delgado had 37 homers on the year before belting a three-run shot in the first inning, and then solo homers in the fourth, sixth and eighth to cap off his ridiculous game. Gennett ended the night with 42 career home runs, meaning he hit 9.5 percent of his home runs to date in one game. It was perhaps the most unlikely of any of the occurrences on this list. The D-backs acquired Martinez from the Tigers in mid-July to add pop to their lineup, and the slugger showed off that power in highly impressive fashion against the rival Dodgers. Bill Mueller is the only player to hit a grand slam from each side of the plate.
Ken Williams was the first to achieve this, doing so in 1922. He remained the sole member of the club for 34 years until Willie Mays achieved consecutive 30–30 seasons in 1956 and 1957. He remained the only player to accomplish this until 1997, when his son Barry Bonds achieved his fifth 30–30 season. The most recent player to reach the milestone is Cedric Mullins, who achieved the feat during the 2021 season. This is the 28th time a player has hit 30 home runs from the leadoff spot in a season.
In total, 43 players have reached the 30–30 club in MLB history and thirteen have done so more than once. Of these 43 players, 29 were right-handed batters, nine were left-handed and five were switch hitters, meaning they could bat from either side of the plate. Eight of these players (including four active members of the 30–30 club) have played for only one major league team. The Atlanta Braves, Cincinnati Reds, Cleveland Indians, Colorado Rockies, New York Mets, and San Francisco Giants are the only franchises to have three players reach the milestone. Five players – Hank Aaron, Barry Bonds, Willie Mays, Alex Rodriguez and Sammy Sosa – are also members of the 500 home run club, and Aaron, Mays and Rodriguez are also members of the 3,000 hit club. Both Mays and Rollins also reached the 20–20–20 club in the same season.
By then, the Dodgers had clinched the division and had not too much else to play for besides Baker joining his teammates in the 30-home-run club. I have been a Dodger Fan since 1959, In 1960 I think I collected almost every teams baseball cards. The 1977 season was a memorable one for the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Schmidt didn't even get the fun started until the fifth inning, when he clubbed a two-run homer before blasting a solo shot in the seventh. He went deep again in the eighth and 10th frames to help the Phils pull out the victory. Bret Boone and Cameron also went back-to-back in the same inning twice, a feat that still has never been matched. "I've seen a lot of baseball in my life, but four home runs in the first five innings of a game? No! It couldn't happen to a nicer young man," Lou Pinella said afterward, according to Baseball Almanac. Mark McGwire led the American League in home runs in 1987 and 1996.
